LIFE IN THE UNION

MIROSŁAW PIOTROWSKI

Life at elderly age in the union is not safe. Hidden problems, including the ones connected with retirement, lead to more often procedures of the so-called enriching elderly age with dignity, that is, introducing euthanasia

Life in the Union is comfortable especially for young, healthy and noncontroversial people. It is lined with the American style of positive thinking - ‘I’m OK, you’re OK’. This model is observed with jealousy not only by hedonists in many parts of the world, for example, Northern Africa, Near East and Turkey. They are looking at the Union through the prism of Germany, Scandinavian countries and Benelux. Desire to improve existence conditions is a stimulus for the contemporary wander of peoples which raised the biggest crisis in the history of the European Union. In the clash with a serious problem, one can see with a bare eye, how the seams of EU basting are bursting both in the organizational dimension and in the so-called European values. People arriving in Europe are mostly young who want to live better. Live in the European Union perceived as an exclusive house of calm elderly life. However, most of them will find out that life at elderly age in the union is not safe. Hidden problems, including the ones connected with retirement, lead to more often procedures of the so-called enriching elderly age with dignity, that is, introducing euthanasia. The process is gradual, first in Holland, then in Belgium, and in a while in the whole European Union, although not at once. Recently in the European Parliament a written statement about ‘dignity at the end of life’ has been rejected – it did not gain a required number of euro-deputies’ signatures. Initiators wanted everyone in the European Union to be able to decide about the end of their lives, especially in the case of an incurable illness causing ‘unbearable physical and psychical suffering’. So, paradoxically speaking, it was noticed that even in the European Union somebody is suffering. However, the suggested solution is drastic, similarly as in the case of unborn children. In the definite majority of resolutions of the European Parliament writings making it possible for killing a baby have been voted, certainly in particular cases. Each of us finances the membership fee in the Union, which covers the cost of abortion, for example, in the Third World countries, and also experiments on human embryos. There are many protests against it, organized by many citizens’ organizations, like the Federation ‘One of us’ which requires stopping neglecting human life in the European Union. There are various actions, conferences, like the recent 6th European Week for Life in the European Parliament. I think that such a cyclical pre-Easter activity is not accidental. The time of Easter raises for reflection on new life.
