YOU ARE SOMEBODY

Fr. IRENEUSZ SKUBIŚ

It was night. Everything started with the ordinary question: Does the world have a soul? What is the conscience of the world like? We are watching the world, we are looking at it with admiration, we are enjoying it, we are learning it, we are experiencing everything happening in it. We are touching its various spheres – material world driven by laws of nature, physics, chemistry, we see the world which is animate and inanimate, universe still not explored by the man…

I think that searching for the soul of the world, first we should look at the human soul. And starting with some examples, we must ask the question: Did Hitler have a soul? – Yes, he did! Did great revolutionists have souls? – Yes, they did! Did those who signed the verdict of death on Polish officers in Katyń have souls? Each of them must have had a soul. Also the executioners who murdered members of the National Army, their brothers, in prisons in Mokotów and other places of execution. Following the history further, one can think: Did Gomółka have a soul? –Well, he did. Did Cyrankiewicz have a soul? – Well, he did. But also John Paul II, cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, archbishop IgnacyTokarczuk, Lech Kaczyński had souls….. Also Janusz Palikot, Donald Tusk, BronisławKomorowski have souls… So many people in the world – and each of them has a soul…

What does it mean? Every human being has a spiritual life, a kind of inner conscience in which he lives. He is free, can do what he wants, can have and realize plans, can love and hate, can choose and judge, do such and such deeds, can want something for himself and for a country, or maybe for his group or a party. We make plans, choices, we reach to various parts of the world… First the man must comprise this all with his mind, must reflect on it deeper, sometimes must register it briefly. Each of human actions starts in the human mind, is born inside the man. Later it somehow explodes in a form of a fact and becomes the reality. If the man did not think about something, it would not take on a real dimension. If the man did not have an inner world, everything would look completely different. So, it is good that this inner human world exists, because in this way the world has got a soul. If a soul disappeared inside the man, he would not be fully a human being, and the world without a soul would become cruel and terrifying.

So, the world is not a resultant of some physical solutions, it is not based only on the rules of dynamics. The world, its history exist on the basis of thinking and take their beginning in the human consciousness. Therefore, speaking about some forces which can have influence on building the world, we see that these are forces of the good and the bad, love or hatred; these are forces which are a good search, giving development to everything, or they are destruction, solution or complication. These searches and solutions have inner and spiritual dimension. Therefore, I can ask many people who undertook a fight against God: what is wrong with your consciousness? Why did you decide to fight against yourself? After all, in this way you deny the existence of a soul in you, your whole inner life, which is, which influences your behavior and which depends on your will, on your choice…

So, returning to the question: Does the world have a soul? – we must state: It does! The world without a soul would not be ours, it would be a desert like the Moon or other planets. The world without a soul would always be dead and very poor. What would the silver picture of the Moon mean, if nobody cared about it? What would the beauty of Mars mean if nobody’s eyes would look at it? What would our Earth mean, empty and lifeless if it was not for our human soul and consciousness? Therefore - there is a soul in the world. It is like the human soul. And the human soul gives the sense to life. After all, you are not going through life determined only by biological, physical and chemical factors…You are not a resultant of forces in the nature. You are SOMEBODY more than Mendeleev’s array. You are SOMEBODY more than the freemasonry or other atheistic groups would like to define you – remember – they are leading to nothing, but only to a grave and dust. Only Jesus who as a signpost was born for a soul and the world, will lead you to life, to joyful consciousness, that everything has its sense which is the eternity with God – a beautiful world which I wish you today…
